Bair Hugger

Bair Hugger temperature management systems have recently become the subject of lawsuits that charge manufacturer 3M for failing to warn the public of its product’s risks. Bair Hugger is a warming blanket that is frequently used during hip and knee surgeries. While 3M argues that Bair Hugger is safe, expert studies have implicated the product in causing deep-joint infections.

Joint Infection

Bair Hugger is widely used; in fact, at least 80 percent of hospitals in the U.S. use the product during millions of hip and knee surgeries every year. Studies have shown, however, that the product’s popularity does not equate to safety. Surgeries involving implants of knees, hips, and heart valves are prone to infections when the Bair Hugger product is used.

If the medical evidence wasn’t enough to dispel myths of Bair Huggers safety, the product’s own inventor, Dr. Scott D. Augustine, has come out in favor of a recall. Dr. Augustine has argued that Bair Hugger is unsafe because of its implication in cases of infections during surgery.

Battling Back

At least 50 orthopedic surgery patients have filed lawsuits against 3M, claiming that Bair Hugger caused was behind their severe deep-joint infections. Victims of Bair Hugger-caused infections blame 3M for failing to conduct thorough tests on their products, failing to warn the public about potential risks, and failing to address issues with products once they have arisen. While no settlements have yet been made, the number of lawsuits filed continues to increase.
