If you are like most people, you have many questions about your law case. Techmeier Law Firm is here to help. We cannot give out legal advice on this website, but we can provide some general information that might help you moving forward. Call us for a legal consultation – which is free and confidential – to talk in more detail.

Tips on Hiring a Lawyer

1.  Do I even need a lawyer?

Maybe not. Some legal matters – just like some health matters – can be taken care of on your own. But why take that chance, especially if you can get a professional opinion for free? We will give you straight talk. We will tell you if we think you need a lawyer, and we will tell you if we think we are the right one for you.

2.  What things should I look for in choosing a lawyer?

Start with experience. Make sure your lawyer has previously dealt with cases like yours. Read their biography. Ask what geographic areas they cover. See what results the lawyer has obtained in other cases. Ask about fees. Techmeier Law Firm handles most cases on a contingency basis – if you don’t get a financial recovery, you don’t have to pay a penny in attorney fees or costs.

3.  How will you help me?

We will investigate the facts of your case and explain your legal rights and options. We will deal with the insurance companies, which are always looking to pay out as little as possible. We will know what documents, records and evidence to submit in order to maximize your recovery. We will take care of all the paperwork and the million little details, so that you can concentrate on getting healthy again.

4.  What will happen when I call you?

You will speak with a courteous professional about the details of your case. There is no commitment. There is no charge for the call, which is completely confidential.

5.  Will we meet in person?

Yes, if we both decide to move forward. We will make the initial appointment as comfortable as possible. Seeing a lawyer can be stressful. We will try to alleviate that stress with clear, honest talk. We will discuss the pros and cons of your case, as well as how long it might take and what the likely outcomes might be. We will discuss fees and costs. We will come up with a strategy customized for your unique situation.

6.  Will I need to bring in money for my first appointment?

No. The first meeting is free. At that time we will discuss attorney fees and costs so that you will have a clear idea of what lies ahead. Most of our cases are handled on a contingency fee basis – if you do not get a recovery, you pay us no fee or costs.

Information About Accident and Injury Cases

11.   I’ve been in an accident. What should I be doing to help my legal case?

Your first priority should be to get all necessary medical treatment. Sometimes in the shock and confusion after an accident it is hard to tell how badly you are hurt – or even if you are hurt at all. Some injuries might not become apparent until later. That is why it is absolutely critical to have a comprehensive medical examination. Keep all important documents, such as medical bills and records, accident reports and photographs. Make a list of important names and dates. Consider keeping a diary or chronology of what has happened. Do not sign any paper or accept payment from an insurance company before getting legal advice.

12.  Will I go to court?

It depends. Most cases settle prior to trial. Whether to settle or not is always your decision, although we will advise you of the pros and cons either way. If the case does not settle, you may have no recourse but to file a lawsuit and go to court. From day one, we prepare all our cases as if we were headed to trial. That way we are always ready when the time comes.

13.  What is a statute of limitations?

The statute of limitations is the amount of time you have to file a lawsuit. If the statute of limitations has passed, your claim might be forever barred. Different statutes of limitation apply to different kinds of cases. The clock is running – that’s why it is important to contact an attorney without delay.

14.  What sort of compensation can I expect to recover?

Every case is different. Depending on the facts of your case, you might be entitled to monetary damages for pain and suffering, medical expenses, property loss, hospital bills, lost income, scars and disfigurement, rehabilitation costs, wrongful death, and possibly punitive damages.

15.  What is a class action?

A class action is a lawsuit that allows many people to bring a legal claim as a single group, called a class. Typically, the class members have been harmed in similar ways by the same defendant. Multidistrict litigation is a similar concept. In multidistrict litigation, however, the cases are not combined in a class even though they might be tried in one court before the same judge. They remain individually active, so that damage awards or settlements are tailored to the individual plaintiffs. Techmeier Law Firm is experienced in handling both class actions and multidistrict litigation.

16.  Can you guarantee I will win my case?

Unfortunately, no. What we can guarantee is hard work, undivided loyalty and relentless tenacity. And we are proud of our results. We have become one of the most recognized and respected law firms in Wisconsin. You can see some of our case outcomes here.
