Valsartan belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blocks (ARBs) used to treat hypertension, recent heart attacks and heart failure. In 2018, Zhejian Huahai Pharmaceuticals, the largest wholesale producer of generic valsartan discovered that the Valsartan it was producing was contaminated with NDMA. The NDMA contamination occurred by changing the method of synthesizing the drug that the company had adopted years prior. Certain batches of valsartan produced by Hetero Labs Limited were also contaminated with NDMA. Once discovered, the FDA and European health officials recalled all potentially affected versions of Valsartan.
